Having a beautiful, bright smile is an important part of feeling self-confident and attractive. Dr. Dickson at Allegra Dental Center helps patients look and feel their best with state-of-the-art teeth whitening services aimed at providing patients from throughout the Fairfax, Virginia area with brighter, whiter smiles they can be proud of.
Teeth can become dull, yellow, or stained from a variety of reasons. The most common causes of tooth staining and discoloration comes from the foods and beverages we eat such as coffee, tea, berries, red wine and deeply-colored spices. These foods and beverages contain pigments that stain teeth, and food coloring in prepared food can also cause discoloration. Foods high in certain acids, including citrus fruits, can temporarily cause enamel to soften, making it easier for stains to penetrate. Tobacco use is also a common cause yellow or brown stains. Poor oral hygiene habits can also contribute to a dingy, dull appearance.
During the whitening process the teeth will first be cleansed to remove debris, excess plaque or tartar, that would otherwise block the bleaching solutions. Once the teeth are cleaned, a gentle retainer is used to protect the gums and soft tissue of the mouth. A professional grade hydrogen peroxide whitening gel is then applied to the teeth. An LED light is directed at the gel covered teeth for about 15 minutes to fully activate the whitening components. The gel will be removed and the teeth should appear to be whiter and brighter immediately.
Professional teeth whitening performed under the supervision of the dentist is completely safe. At the practice, the doctor uses state-of-the-art methods to whiten teeth so patients can enjoy a healthier-looking smile. These products and techniques provide greater consistency and longer-lasting results compared with over-the-counter treatments, and because they're used under the supervision of an oral care professional, patients can feel confident about their results. Teeth whitening treatments can make your teeth a little more sensitive to hot or cold temperatures, but the effect is only temporary and will quickly resolve once treatment is complete. In the first 12-24 hours following treatment, it is advised to avoid consuming foods and beverages that cause staining, such as colas or coffee, and to refrain from smoking. Daily brushing and flossing should be continued as normal.
