At Allegra Dental Center, Dr. Dickson provides patients in Merrifield and Fairfax, VA with the highest-quality dental implants and implant restorations so patients with missing teeth can feel more confident in their appearance. The practice uses state-of-the-art materials for results that are designed to look and feel like natural teeth.
Dental implants are specially-designed restorations that are used to replace missing teeth with natural-looking prosthetic teeth or to provide secure anchors for bridges or dentures. Implants use strong titanium posts embedded into the jaw bone where they fuse with the natural bone over time. When attached to an artificial tooth using a connector called an abutment, implants look, feel, and function just like natural teeth.
Most implant procedures take three visits to complete. During the first visit, the post will be carefully implanted into the jaw. If there isn't enough bone to support the implant, a bone graft or sinus lift procedure may need to be performed to provide adequate support. The post will be allowed to fuse with the bone for several weeks before the second visit occurs. During that appointment, the abutment will be attached, and an impression will be made and sent to the lab where the artificial tooth will be made. At the third appointment, the artificial tooth (or crown) will be attached to the post using the abutment, and the crown will be gently polished and buffed for a perfect fit. Different types of implants are available including implants that can be placed in one visit. During the evaluation, the dentist will determine the best type for each patient’s needs.
The implants the office uses are made of strong and durable materials designed to withstand the normal wear and tear associated with chewing and eating. However, just like natural teeth, implants can become damaged if they are not cared for properly. Also similar to natural teeth, implants are subject to the effects of gum disease, and biting hard objects like ice or hard candy can cause them to fracture. At Allegra Dental Center, the dentist provides implant restorations designed to address all sorts of damage, including broken and loose implants, so patients can protect their investment and preserve their great-looking smile.
